Vineyard Manager

The Opportunity
The Vineyard Manager leads the day-to-day operation of the 105-acre Estate vineyards in cool-climate Lake Country with GI sites planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Gamay, and Merlot. The role reports to the Head Viticulturist, executes the seasonal viticulture program, supervises the vineyard crew (including the SAWP team), and works closely with the winemaking team to deliver fruit that reflects OFV’s organic-method, block-by-block farming philosophy and sustainability standards.
This is a hands-on leadership role. The right person is in the rows daily, knows every block, and runs the program through clear direction to the crew, accurate records, and tight communication with viticulture and winemaking leadership.

What You’ll Do:
Vineyard Operations
Manage 105 acres of cool-climate plantings across multiple blocks, varietals, and aspects.
Execute and oversee seasonal vineyard activities — pruning, shoot thinning, canopy management (VSP), leaf removal, cluster thinning, fruit selection, and harvest.
Schedule and coordinate vineyard tasks in alignment with the seasonal plan set by the Head Viticulturist.
Operate and troubleshoot the drip irrigation system (overhauled in 2024) with block-specific scheduling informed by soil moisture sensors and vegetation indicators.
Implement fertilizer, soil amendment, compost, and cover crop programs aligned with OFV’s organic-method approach.
Vine health, pest & disease management
Monitor vine health and phenology throughout the growing season, block by block.
Conduct regular vineyard scouting for pests and diseases; report findings and act on them promptly.
Execute the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and spray program with accurate record-keeping.
Identify and report vine stress, nutrient deficiencies, and weather-related risks.
Crew leadership and SAWP
Lead, train, and supervise the vineyard crew — SAWP workers and returning seasonal local staff — so that work is completed safely, efficiently, and to OFV’s quality standard.
Manage the SAWP crew in compliance with Employment and Social Development Canada, IRCC, and provincial program requirements.
Assign daily tasks, monitor productivity, and provide hands-on coaching and feedback.
Support onboarding and training of seasonal and returning vineyard staff.
Ensure crew payroll (SAWP and local) is submitted accurately and on the payroll schedule.
Equipment, compliance and safety
Safely operate and oversee the use of vineyard equipment, including tractors, ATVs, sprayers, and hand tools.
Maintain and organize vineyard equipment and infrastructure; coordinate repairs with the maintenance team.
Enforce WorkSafeBC standards and OFV’s vineyard safety protocols across the crew.
Maintain compliance with applicable provincial and federal agricultural regulations, including pesticide handling, applicator licensing, and spray application records.
Data collection and reporting
Collect and verify vineyard data — yield estimates, crop load assessments, berry sampling, and maturity data.
Maintain accurate records for spray applications, irrigation, labour hours, and vineyard performance; submit to the Head Viticulturist in a timely manner.
Support internal reporting, SWBC Sustainable Vineyard and Winery Standards initiatives, and regulatory compliance
What You Bring:
Minimum 5 years of vineyard or viticulture experience
Demonstrated experience leading or supervising vineyard crews
Strong working knowledge of cool-climate viticulture and BC grape varietals
Tractor and vineyard equipment operation experience
Strong organizational, record-keeping, and basic budgeting skills
Valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence
Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Eligible to work in Canada
Preference will be given to candidates with:
Fluency in Spanish —given the composition of the SAWP crew
Formal education in viticulture, agriculture, or a related field
BC Pesticide Applicator Certificate or experience executing spray programs
Experience with vineyard management software or data collection tools
Familiarity with organic-method farming and SWBC Sustainable Vineyard and Winery Standards

VINEYARD FOREMAN, NORTH
We are seeking a hands-on, experienced Vineyard Foreman to manage our vineyards in the Northern Okanagan. In this role, you will oversee the daily operations of approximately 100 acres of company-managed vineyards, ensuring vine health, productivity, and sustainability.
In this role, you will supervise vineyard labour, monitor key data, manage costs, and support critical viticulture decisions through accurate observation and reporting. Responsibilities
Vineyard Operations
Assume day-to-day ownership of assigned vineyard blocks, ensuring all cultural practices are completed according to viticultural plans, seasonal timelines, and quality standards.
Execute and oversee all vineyard operations including pruning, tying, shoot positioning, wire management, leaf removal, cluster thinning, hand hoeing, tractor operations, irrigation management, and harvest activities.
Take direct responsibility for vineyard health, ensuring vines are maintained in a disease-free condition through proactive monitoring, prevention, and timely intervention.
Conduct regular, vineyard scouting for pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, water stress, frost damage, and vine balance.
Flag and communicate potential risks early, recommending corrective measures to management and carrying out corrective actions in the field.
Ensure vineyard work supports production targets for yield, fruit quality, vine longevity, and sustainability.
Labour Leadership & Performance Management
Train, mentor, and hold accountable vineyard crews, including local employees and Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs).
Set clear daily and weekly work plans and quality expectations.
Support coordination, onboarding, and compliance related to Temporary Foreign Worker programs (SAWP, AgStream).
Manage fertilizer, chemical, tool, and supply inventories to ensure appropriate availability and stewardship.
Equipment, Irrigation & Infrastructure
Oversee the safe and effective use of vineyard equipment and machinery.
Ensure preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.
Take primary responsibility for irrigation system operation, including scheduling, monitoring, troubleshooting, repairs, and reporting deficiencies.
Maintain vineyard infrastructure (trellis systems, wires, posts, drip irrigation) to required standards.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Lead vineyard safety practices and ensure compliance with OH&S, WCB, WHMIS, pesticide use regulations, and company policies.
Identify hazards, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions.
Ensure crews are trained, equipped, and working safely at all times.
Harvest & Cross-Department Support
Coordinate and participate in harvest operations, including supervising vineyard crews and hauling fruit from company and contract vineyards as required.
Support other operational divisions as needed, including equipment operation and vineyard crew supervision.
Be available for on-call responsibilities related to irrigation, frost events, disease risk periods, and emergencies.
Skills & Qualifications
Certificate, diploma, or degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field preferred.
Spanish language considered an asset
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required; Class 3 or Endorsement 20 required or obtainable.
Ability to lift up to 50+ lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to be “on-call” and work long hours as required
Minimum 2–5 years of vineyard experience, including leadership responsibility.
Demonstrated ability to assess vine health, identify disease and pest pressure, and implement preventative practices.
Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and disciplined record-keeping.

The operator carries out mechanized work throughout the growing season — mowing, cultivation, spraying, hedging, and harvest support — while keeping equipment clean, calibrated, and well maintained. The work demands precision, mechanical aptitude, and a strong safety mindset, often on sloped and uneven terrain and within narrow vine rows.
This role involves outdoor, physical work across estate vineyard blocks throughout the growing season. There will be extended hours, early starts, and weekend work during spray windows, harvest, and frost-protection events, seasonal intensity from bud-break through harvest (roughly March to November), with reduced winter hours. Exposure to agricultural chemicals, requires strict adherence to handling and PPE protocols.

What You'll Do
Equipment Operation
Vineyard tasks — operate tractors and implements to perform vineyard practices including mowing, discing, under-vine cultivation, spreading, hedging, trimming, and harvest support.
Spraying — conduct foliar and ground applications of fungicides, fertilizers, and other inputs using sprayers, following the spray program set by the Vineyard Manager and all label directions.
Precision — select correct gear, RPM, and ground speed for each task, and maintain consistent, accurate passes between narrow vine rows and on sloped ground.
Support vehicles — operate ATVs, UTVs, forklifts, and light equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, and blowers as required.
Maintenance and Safety
Daily checks — inspect equipment before each use, monitor operation for malfunctions, and keep tractors, sprayers, and implements clean and ready to work.
MiUpkeep — perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs; arrange professional servicing through authorized shops when needed, per the maintenance schedule.
Calibration — monitor and maintain sprayer calibrations and implement adjustments with guidance from the Vineyard Manager.
Safety — follow all safety and bio-security procedures, wear required PPE, and comply with WorkSafeBC and pesticide-handling regulations at all times.
Records & Teamwork
Reporting — maintain equipment-use, maintenance, and spray application records accurately and on time.
Communication — report problems, observations, and recommended solutions to the Vineyard Manager daily.
Vigilance — scout vine rows during passes and flag disease, pest, irrigation, or trellis issues for follow-up.
Crew work — participate cooperatively in general vineyard crew work — pruning, tying, suckering, canopy management, trellis and irrigation repair, and hand-harvest support — when not operating equipment.

Demonstrated tractor and implement operating experience, ideally in a vineyard, orchard, or row-crop setting.
Comfort and competence operating equipment on slopes, uneven ground, and within narrow rows.
Solid mechanical understanding with the ability to troubleshoot and perform basic equipment maintenance.
Valid B.C. driver’s licence and a safe driving record.

Work Environment
Combination of outdoor vineyard work and indoor cellar work
Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and agricultural equipment and chemicals
Physically demanding work including lifting, bending, and extended periods on foot, on uneven terrain
Variable schedule with extended hours during harvest and bottling
Compensation
Seasonal fluctuations in hours; possibly reduced winter (Dec/Jan) schedule or temporary layoff
